After
a tenure of nearly three years in Mumbai, the 9 Kumaon of the
Indian Army is proceeding to Jammu and Kashmir for their next
deployment. The unit had come to Mumbai from Uri sector in
Kashmir Valley. Vice Admiral Madhavendra Singh, FOC-in-C,
Western Naval Command, Maj Gen VS Yadav, GOC, M & G Area
and Brig PK Rampal, the Mumbai Sub Area Commander addressed
the troops on the occasion and exhorted them to continue their
remarkable service to the nation.
This
battalion has demonstrated, its strength and spirit in many
battles and operations and earned a commendable name for
itself. The battalion earned ‘Theatre Honour’ in the
Sialkot sector in the 1965 conflict and in East Pakistan in
the 1971 war. They were also deployed in Sri Lanka in 1989 and
in the Rajasthan sector. For operations on the Siachen
Glacier, an Officer from the unit was awarded Vir Chakra and
a JCO was commended.
The unit has also
performed remarkably in counter-insurgency operations in the
North-East where they were awarded Best Battalion in 1973-74
and also a Chief of the Army Staff Unit citation.
