INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATIONS

 

Prime Minister, Mr Atal Behari Vajpayee unfurled the national flag on the ramparts of the historic Red Fort on August 15 on the occasion of 55th Independence Day and addressed the nation.

On arrival at Red Fort, the Prime Minister was received by Defence Minister, Mr Jaswant Singh, Minister of State for Defence, Mr UV Krishnam Raju and others. The Defence Secretary introduced Maj Gen V Bhanot, General Officer Commanding, Delhi Area to the Prime Minister. The General Officer Commanding, Delhi Area conducted the Prime Minister to the saluting base where a combined inter-services and police guards presented a general salute to the Prime Minister. Thereafter, Mr Atal Behari Vajpayee inspected a guard of honour and proceeded to the ramparts where he unfurled the national flag. The Air Force band, comprising 25 musicians, played the national anthem. The 81 Ceremonial Field Battery commanded by Maj JS Bali presented a 21-gun salute. The Prime Minister then addressed the nation.

The guard of honour for the national flag was commanded by Wg Cdr Dharam Punni and consisted of 32 men and one officer each from the three Services and Delhi Police. Junior Division Cadets of NCC from Delhi Directorate comprising Army, Navy, Air Force and Girls wings participated in the flag hoisting ceremony.

About 13,500 school-children from 41 schools under the Directorate of Education, National Capital Territory, Delhi took part in the Independence Day celebrations at the Red Fort. The Naval band comprising 28 musicians and conducted by JG Das, Master Chief Petty Officer Musician, provided accompaniment to the schoolchildren and NCC cadets.
