Former
Chief Of Naval Staff Passes Away
Admiral
Adhar Kumar Chatterji, former Chief of the Naval Staff, passed away in New
Delhi on August 6 last.
Born
in 1914, Admiral Chatterji joined the Royal Indian Navy in 1933 as the
first Cadet Entry Officer. As an anti-submarine warfare specialist, he saw
active service during World War II while serving on board various ships of
the Royal Navy and the Royal Indian Navy in the Atlantic and the Indian
Ocean. An alumnus of the Royal Staff College in UK, Admiral Chatterji held
various appointments at Naval Headquarters and command levels. These
included Director of Naval Plans, Commander-in-Charge Bombay, Deputy Chief
of Naval Staff and Commandant, National Defence College. He commanded INS Delhi
twice, earning the distinction of being the first Indian officer to
command the cruiser.
Whilst
in the rank of Commodore, he had the privilege of commanding the Indian
Fleet. He steered the Indian Navy as the Chief of the Naval Staff from
March 4, 1966 to February 28, 1970. Admiral Chatterji's contribution shall
always remain etched in golden letters in the history of the Indian Navy.

India
And Japan Hold Military Talks
The
first session of military-to-military talks between India and Japan were
held in Tokyo recently. The talks were held as a part of India-Japan
comprehensive security dialogue. The Indian side was led by Mr B A Roy,
Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Defence while the Japanese side was led
by Mr K Masuda, head of the policy planning division in the Japanese
Defence Agency.
There
was a wide-ranging exchange of views on defence policies and security
perspectives of the two countries. In-depth discussions also took place on
ways and means to furhter intensify bilateral defence cooperation.
Participation in each other's military exercises, developmental studies in
the area of defence and security, disaster relief and search-and-rescue
exercises were also discussed.
The
talks provided a useful institutional framework to strengthen the
bilateral relationship between India and Japan. Both sides acknowledged
that the talks had been useful and it was agreed that the
military-to-military talks between India and Japan should be held on an
annual basis.

and Kashmir Light Infantry Regiment: In the Service of the Nation
The
Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry Regiment celebrated its 53rd year of
service to the nation amidst the sounding of bagpipes and swearing-in of
the 53rd course recruits at the Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry
Regimental Centre.
The
auspicious day began with an impressive passing-out parade of the
recruits. The first salute of the ceremonial parade was taken by Lt Col
Anil Sharma. The final salute was taken by Maj Gen Basant Singh, Chief of
Staff of the Srinagar Corps.
Col
RK Singh, the Commandant, speaking on the occasion, said that one year of
rigorous instruction transforms a young civilian into a competent soldier.
Jammu
and Kashmir Light Infantry is composed exclusively of the people of
J&K. This regiment was founded as the J&K Militia which has done
yeoman service in protecting Kashmir from the foreign invaders in the
post- independence era. This regiment has one Param Vir Chakra, eleven
Maha Vir Chakra, forty Vir Chakra, one AVSM, seven VSM, 93 Sena Medals, 59
Mention-in-Despatches, 235 Commendation Cards amongst other awards to its
credit. Various awards were presented to the recruits on the occasion.
Recruit Shakti Singh from Jammu was adjudged the best recruit in physical
training, Recruit Javed Iqbal from Rajouri the best firer and Recruit Izaj
Ahmed from Kupwara the best in drill. The coveted Sword of Honour awarded
to the best all rounder was presented to Recruit Charanjit Singh.
