Best Marching Contingent

The Madras Regiment has been adjudged the best marching contingent from the services. The Delhi Police contingent has been adjudged the best marching contingent among the para military forces and other auxiliary contingents, for the tenth time. The Delhi Police contingent broke the jinx after four years.

 

Beating the Retreat Cancelled

For the first time since independence "Beating the Retreat" ceremony held every year against the backdrop of the setting sun at Raisina Hills was cancelled in view of the enormous loss of human lives and properties in quake-hit Gujarat.

As the personnel of the Armed Forces were extremely busy in the relief and rescue operations in Gujarat, they could not take on the ceremonial activities involved in "Beating the Retreat".

 

Making a Mark

Nb Sub G Vadivelu was enrolled in the Corps of Signals on January 9, 1994. Nb Sub G Vadivelu within a span of just four years, achieved the distinction of placing India on the international map of weightlifting.

He represented India in Silver Dragon International Weightlifting Championship held at Cardiff, Wales (UK) in October, 1997 and won silver medal in 70 kg weight category. In March 1998, he secured silver medal in Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship held at Nauru. Again in September 1998, Nb Sub G Vadivelu won bronze medal in Commonwealth Games held at Kaula Lumpur, Malaysia.

The Ministry of Culture, Youth Affairs and Sports under the scheme of special award winners of international sports events awarded a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh to Nb Sub Vadivelu.
