The 16th unit of Sea Cadet Corps comm-issioned in December last year by the Director General Coast Guard, Vice Admiral John C Desilva, is a new millenium gift from the service to the youth of Daman. This unit will function in pursuit of the aim of Sea Cadet Corps.

The idea of launching the Sea Cadet Corps at Daman has been the brainchild of Capt Manjeet Singh, the Commanding Officer, Coast Guard Air Station, Daman as he felt that there was an abundance of high quality talent which could be channelised.

Seventy two cadets from various schools of Daman participated in the commissioning ceremony. The ceremony was marked by a smart parade put up by the young cadets, alongwith the Sea Cadet Corps band from training ship Jawahar, Mumbai.

The invitees also witnessed the display of semaphore message by the cadets. The parade was saluted by a formation flypast conducted by the Dornier and Chetak aircraft from the 'Hawks' and the 'Rakshak' squadron of Coast Guard Air
Station, Daman. The Commissioning Order
by Vice Admiral Madhavendra Singh, Chairman trustee of the Sea Cadet Council, was read by the Assistant Commandant MS Gill, Commanding Officer, Sea Cadet Corps, Daman Unit. The Sea Cadet Corps oath was taken by the cadets during the ceremony.

The chief guest, Vice Admiral John C Desilva during his address appreciated the enthusiasm of the young cadets and complimented the cadets for an excellent turn-out and parade. He expressed his happiness over the commissioning of the first unit of Sea Cadet Corps in Daman. The community interaction programme should aim to establish many more units of the Corps at the remotest of the Coast Guard Stations so that many more maritime oriented citizens and leaders might be produced, he added.
