The
Rajputana Rifles is the oldest rifle regiment of the Indian
Army. It celebrated its twelfth post-Independence reunion at
Delhi Cantonment recently. A large number of retired officers
including three earlier Colonels of the regiment of the rank
of Lieutenant General attended the reunion. The British
chapter of the Rajputana Rifles Officers Association was
represented by Maj Edward Morrow who came all the way from UK
to attend the reunion. He is a retired officer of the
Rajputana Rifles having served in Indian Army prior to
Independence. More than 300 retired JCOs and ORs including a
number of former Subedar Majors were also present on the
occasion. The regiment had also invited a cross-section of
widows and next of kin of its soldiers who were martyred in
various wars and counter-insurgency operations since
Independence. They were honoured by Lt Gen R S Kodyan, the
present Colonel of the Rajputana Rifles.
The
regiment comprises 18 active, two Territorial Army and two
Rashtriya Rifles battalions. The first battalion of the
regiment was raised as far back as on January 10, 1775. During
operation Vijay, 2 Rajputana Rifles opened the doors of
victory for the Indian Army by capturing Tololing on June 13,
1999.
Today, the Rajputana
Rifles can boast of having one Param Vir Chakra, one Ashok
Chakra, 10 Mahavir Chakra, 52 Vir Chakra, 7 Kirti
Chakra, 30 Shaurya Chakra, 145 Sena Medals
and 2068 other awards.
