Gurez
Valley in Kashmir is an under-developed area un- touched by the pace of
indus- trialisation. Despite being one of the most beautiful valleys in
Jammu and Kashmir, it has remained isolated due to a difficult terrain.
Rearing of livestock still remains an important means of livelihood for
the local public. The area is devoid of modern medicare facilities for the
villagers and their livestock. Keeping this in view, a one-day verterinary
camp was organised by a Field Regiment at Dawar in Gurez. This camp was
first of its kind. Facilities for artificial insemination also formed part
of this camp.
The
site for the camp was selected with due care on the southern bank of
Kishan Ganga River. It offered adequate space for accommodating large
number of animals and a registration centre. The camp had three veterinary
clinics and one dispensary. The veterinary staff and medicines were
provided by 26 Mobile Veterinary Hospital. The civilian agencies also
pitched in along with their veterinary staff and the artificial
insemination clinic.
A total of over 600 cattle and 800
sheep were examined and treated by the veterinary doctors. Free medicines
for prolonged medication on as-required-basis and medicated supplementary
food packages for the weak and infirm animals were also distributed. The
artificial insemination clinic which was established for generating
awareness about artificial insemination procedures for improving the
quality of livestock was the real attraction of the camp.
