Chief
of the Army Staff, Gen NC Vij has been conferred the honorary appointment
of Colonel of the Brigade of Guards at a function held in New Delhi. Lt
Gen RB Singh, Commandant, Army War College and Colonel of the Brigade of
Guards presented accoutrements to Gen NC Vij.
Raised in the year 1952 by Field Marshal KM Cariappa,
the Brigade of Guards is known for its marching contingent at the Republic
Day parades. It has bagged the 'Best Marching Contingent Trophy' for a
number of years.
The Guardsmen have proved their mettle in almost all
operations. This regiment has the distinction of having won a Param Vir
Chakra in 1971 war and a number of awards in other operations.
With its regimental centre at Kamptee in Maharashtra,
the team of Guards has been champion in handball for the past three years.
They have also contributed significantly to boxing and athletics. Today,
this regiment has four serving General Officers in Army.
The appointment of COAS as Honoary Colonel of the
Brigrade of Guards has added another feather to its cap.
