The
ships of flotilla functioning under the aegis of Naval Officer-in-Charge,
Tamil Nadu, have been tasked for multifarious roles. Apart from providing
coastal defence, these ships are actively engaged in patrolling the Palk
Straits with a view to curb militant activities and prevent smuggling of
contraband goods across the International Maritime Boundary Line. In
addition, these ships are actively involved in search and rescue off the
Tamil Nadu Coast.
To meet the demands properly, a need
was long felt to have a dedicated Naval jetty in Chennai wherein ships of
local flotilla can operate smoothly for replenishment or shore support
without disturbance to routine mercantile activities. With the formation
of an integrated command at Port Blair, the importance of this port has
increased manifold. This long cherished desire of Indian Navy has been
fulfilled with the construction of an exclusive Naval wharf at Chennai
Port.
The construction of this wharf
commenced last year. The project was completed in 18 months the under the
supervision of Chennai Port Trust at a cost of Rs 22.16 crore.
This naval wharf was inaugurated by
Vice Admiral Raman Puri, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Naval
Command. M/s AFCONS Infrastructure Ltd, Mumbai and Chief Engineer, Chennai
Port Trust worked in close liaison to complete this major project.
