NAI ROSHNI IN MODA

A model village "Navy Moda", 30 kms from Jamnagar district in Gujarat, was inaugurated on August 28 last. The Navy and the Naval Wives Welfare Association (NWWA) adopted the village under the unique project Nai Roshni following the devastating earthquake on January 26, this year. The village stood in almost complete ruins after the earthquake and suffered over eighty per cent damage. It required a massive relief and rehabilitation programme to achieve any semblance of normalcy. The project was the first of its kind to be implemented by the Navy. A complete package of immediate relief, rehabilitation of 1700 villagers and reconstruction of school and other facilities was provided.

The model village is now ready with 120 houses, a school, community hall, health centre, Panchayat office, Mamlatdar office, an office for the Mahila Vikas Mandal and a shopping plaza. It is complete with roads lined with trees, power and water supply and sanitation.

The Governor of Gujarat, Mr Sunder Singh Bhandari, inaugurated the village and handed over the key to Mr Ram Singh Jadeja, the village mukhiya at a touching ceremony. Vice Admiral Harinder Singh, C-in-C, Southern Naval Command and
Mrs Meena Singh representing NWWA were also present on the occasion.

As soon as all the plans were finalised, the foundation stone was laid by Vice Admiral Harinder Singh who co-ordinated the project on behalf of the Navy. Cmde L K Batra, the Community Development Advisor to the Chief of Naval Staff was engaged right since the inception of the project and played a major role in winning the hearts of the villagers. Cmde TS Ganesan, Commanding Officer, INS Valsura, the naval establishment at Jamnagar was responsible for the implementation of the project. The execution of the entire project including the renaming of the village was done in consultation with the village gram sabha.
