Naval Senior Officers' Conference

The Naval Senior Officers' Conference was held in New Delhi. Addressing the conference, Defence Minister Mr George Fernandes stated that Prime Minister, Mr Atal Behari Vajpayee has once again taken the lead to restart the peace process with Pakistan through dialogue and all efforts should be geared up to make it a success. "However, the problem of terrorism is likely to persist and one should be prepared to deal with it effectively", he added.

Mr Fernandes opined that the Navy has to play an important role in times to come and the country has to be made aware of its role, importance and requirements. While stating that he was aware of the shortage of platforms required for Navy to fulfil its responsibility, Defence Minister reiterated that the government is committed to provide all assistance, budgetary or otherwise, to tide over this problem. He lauded Navy's preparedness during operation Parakram and said that even though she was not engaged in active action, it produced the desired deterrent effect.

The Defence Minister said that Navy has been receiving international acclaim and a number of countries have requested to carry out joint exercises with her. "These joint interactions are mutually beneficial and steps should be taken to increase their frequency", he urged. He also expressed happiness over the progress of project Seabird at Karwar and the Naval Academy project at Ezhimala which are likely to be completed ahead of schedule.

On this occasion, Defence Minister complimented the Naval Commanders for their excellent performance despite constraints. Speaking to mediapersons, Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral Madhvendra Singh said that the most pressing need for the Navy today is the replacement of the ageing aircraft carrier. He also said that Navy has been tackling numerous threats ranging from arms smuggling and drug trafficking to security of energy lifelines at sea. "Navy needs three aircraft carriers and ships in excess of 200 to augment blue-water capability. Appropriate plans are being chalked out to meet this requirement," he added.
