The elite counter-insurgency force, Delta Force, combating terrorism in Doda district celebrated its seventh raising day with gusto. Maj Gen Mohinder Singh, General Officer Commanding, Delta Force, on this occasion felicitated the gallant officers, JCOs and jawans for their unflinching bravery and die-hard commitment in eliminating terrorists and retaining normalcy in the areas of responsibility.

This specialised force, raised in 1994 with the specific purpose of combating terrorism, has virtually grown with lightning speed and has transformed itself, over the years, into a strong force with feathers of stupendous successes added to its cap. The credit, undoubtedly, goes to the unsung heroes who sacrificed their lives and brought honour to this organisation.

It may be recalled that the name of the Force Delta was drawn from the letter ‘D’ of Doda which till September 1994 was in the iron clutches of terrorists. Law and order was non-existent here and anarchy was the order of the day. With the inception of Delta Force into the district, a new lease of life was infused into the crippled and exasperated civil administration.

With an area of responsibility of more than 11,600 sq kms, which is approximately four times the size of the Valley, Doda comprises mountainous terrain covered with dense alpine forests. The terrain and the weather is a challenge to any counter-insurgency force and the Delta Force has been successfully fighting against these odds.

The ability of this elite force is elucidated by its achievements in a short span of six years. Since its inception, it has eliminated 535 terrorists, apprehended 897 and rescued 180 innocents from being coerced into terrorism. The recoveries include 429 AK 47/56 Rifles, 18 UMG/LMG, 148 pistols, 8 sniper rifles, 7 rocket launchers/Pica gun and 5, 60 mm mortars.

These glories have come the hard way. A large number of officers, JCOs and Jawans have made the supreme sacrifice in pursuit of their goals. The valiant troops of Delta Force have won 527 honours and awards till date. On August 15 this year, Delta Force has been bestowed with 81 honours and awards.

Addressing a special sainik sammelan on the occasion of the raising day, Maj Gen Mohinder Singh congratulated all ranks of the Force and said that the terrorists are on the run and scared of head-on encounters with the troops of Delta Force. He also highlighted the fact that the adversary is attempting to raise the number of criminals and foreign mercenaries in Doda district. He asked all ranks to be cautious and to take all steps to foil their evil designs. He also congratulated troops for completing various civic action projects under operation Sadbhavana during this year.
