Naval Care for Terminally I11

 

 

 

INHS Asvini, the Naval Hospital, Mumbai conducted a ten-day course in `Role of a Nurse in Palliative Care.' It was inaugurated by Surg Cmde RT Awasthi, a senior medical officer of the Navy. About 30 participants from Defence and civilian hospitals of Maharashtra state attended this course which was aimed at emphasising the various aspects of the role of a nurse in caring for a terminally ill patient.

The course commenced with the invocation song by the probationer nurses of the School of Nursing. Lt Col P Meera, Principal Tutor, School of Nursing, INHS Asvini in her welcome address, emphasised the need for keeping abreast with the latest developments in medical technology.

Dr LJ De Souza, Professor and Head, Department of Surgery, Chief GI Services, Tata Memorial Hospital delivered the keynote address on `The Challenges of Palliative Care in India'. In his address, he discussed the problems faced by the patients suffering from terminal diseases and the pathways to deliver comprehensive bio-psycho-social care to patients. He finally concluded, `there is a limit for cure, for that is divine and we are not Gods, but there is no limit for care and there is no pain where there is love'.

Surg Capt S Nangpal, Director, Institute of Naval Medicine released the precis on `The role of a nurse in Palliative Care'. Lt Col (Mrs) Maresh Prasad, Secretary organising committee proposed a vote of thanks. The Master of ceremonies was Lt Col (Mrs) Kamlesh Singh.
