Indian
Army formations at Gurez in Kupwara Sector obtained intelligence reports
and radio intercepts regarding the build-up of terrorist activities at
various locations across the Line of Control. In an anticipation of
infiltration attempts by terrorists, Army took a number of
counter-infiltration measures such as denial of crossing of the river
Kishan Ganga and deployment of additional troops upto Shamshabri Ranges.
In addition to these measures, Army launched operation Baruab to
bundle out infiltrators from the region.
The
militant group involved in the infiltration activities was spotted at
Ramanshak which is at an altitude of 4,700 ft. The Army first blocked all
the routes of escape to the Pakistan side. Then the cordon around the
militants was tightened. However, the ultras managed to occupy some
vantage positions in the rugged terrain and started firing at the troops.
In the battle of wits between soldiers and terrorists,
the soldiers emerged victorious. Altogether, 19 terrorists were killed and
the infiltrating group was eliminated. A large quantity of weapons,
ammunition and warlike stores was recovered from them.
This
was a classic operation conducted in an extremely rugged terrain and
adverse weather conditions. The operation, conducted for nine days, was
marked by troops’ preparedness. They did not let the terrorists slip
away after a contact was established. Logistic aspects of this operation
were as challenging as the conduct of operation. The success of the
operation was primarily due to the exemplary leadership of commanders at
all levels and the utmost dedication and devotion displayed by all ranks.
To
expose Pakistani claims, Army authorities brought Defence Attaches (DAs)
of 22 countries to Gurez where they were shown the proof of Pakistan's
involvement in relentless militant infiltrations. They were also taken
around Gurez town where they were free to interact with the local public.
They saw numerous houses and shops which were destroyed by enemy shelling,
used as a smoke screen to facilitate infiltration.
Briefing the Defence Attaches, Maj Gen JK Mohanty, GOC,
Mountain Division, said that the ruggedness of the terrain provides cover
to the ultras to sneak in with an active support by Pakistani troops.
Later, the Defence Attaches were shown piles of weapons, explosives and
documents seized from militants. The slain terrorists belonged to Lashkar-e-
Taiyabba.
