Mamun Cantonment: A Heaven on Earth

Science has made mundane living incredibly easier. Paradoxically, the adverse effects of synthetic living are all pervasive as man in his quest for comfortable living has distanced himself from mother nature. Cantonments, generally located in down town areas, are still a fine example of coexistence of mankind with nature.

Cantonments were conceived by the Britishers for a peaceful and insulated living, away from the hustle- bustle of city life. Over the years, cities have expanded and taken most of the cantonments in their folds engulfing their basic chaste entity.

Mercifully, Mamun has come to establish its credentials as the youngest cantonment with all the facilities the inhabitants can wistfully aspire for. This cantonment has carved out a distinct niche for itself and seems humbly poised to be a model cantonment in this millennium. The overview of the cantonment with cultivated expanse of the meadows and eco parks is a soothing treat to the eyes of the beholder. The layout of family accommodation encompasses children/amusement parks and shopping arcades in order to make the living comfortable. A mobile library makes books available to the families at doorsteps to inculcate reading habits in the residents. The character of the cantonment has been painstakingly crafted in order to make it an ideal dwelling place for soldiers.

Mamun as a military station is complete in all respects. An institute for the JCOs and ORs families with imposing murals (crafted by a reputed city architect) and rockeries gives an aesthetic touch to it. A majestic bust of the jawan is a silent and befitting tribute to the intrepid sentinel braving all odds for a the sake of motherland. Amongst other landmarks is the imposing Gurj (Silver Mace) standing high against the backdrop of picturesque Shivaliks. The Infantry Circle and Tank Chowks are quiet salutations to our Anned Forces. Vocational Training Centre aims at developing skills after exploring the potential of untapped human resources in the families of all ranks. The schools of the cantonment are engaged relentlessly to impart quality education with modem audio-visual aids. Sunrise and sunset witness a splash of colours spilling over the streets and side-walks.

A Modern olympic size swimming pool is one of the prized possessions of the inmates of Mamun. A para -sailing club and a registered riding school are engaged in inculcating adventurous spirit in the impressionable minds.

Improving the quality of life has been the watchword in Mamun Cantonment. The ongoing efforts received a further boost during 1999 -the year of the jawan. The living accommodation of the jawans has been vastly improved and dining hall facilities modemised. We know that where the progress ends, retrogression sets in. Mamum has been created with resolute and astute hands of the senior Anny personnel to make it an ideal place to live in .
