A Colony of the Braves

Ladakh Scouts is one of the elite regiments of the Indian Army which actively participated in operation Vijay. The valour and sacrifice of the gallant Nunoos brought many a laurel to the credit of the Regiment. They, with their built-in toughness and in-born hold over the rough terrain of Ladakh, was instrumental in the Indian victory. The Regiment was conferred one Maha Vir Chakra, six Vir Chakra, two Yudh Seva Medals and fifteen Sena Medals in operation Vijay.

Recognising the sacrifices made by the brave, Nunoos, a sum of Rs 5 lakhs to every Veer Nari and next of kin of those who laid down their lives in operation Vijay was sanctioned towards having a dwelling unit. Besides, the Government of Jammu & Kashmir, the District Administration of Ladakh and the Autonomous Hill Development Council allotted one kanal of land at Agling near Leh to each Veer Nari and next of kin. A Veer Nari Awaas colony has been constructed under the aegis of Ladakh Scouts Regimental Centre. The project was completed in a record time of five months and each of the twentyfive units of the dwelling complex has four spacious rooms in traditional Ladakhi style with all the amenities of modern life. The Veer Nari Awaas colony was inaugurated by Lt Gen SS Grewal, Adjutant General and Colonel of Ladakh Scouts.

Veer Nari Awaas colony has become a unique and historic project as Ladakh Scouts became the first regiment to provide dwelling units to the Veer Nari of the Regiment within the shortest period. Today all the units are occupied and children of martyrs are getting free and quality education within the Regimental centre campus
