Strengthening
the bond and fostering camaraderie in non - regimented units has always
been a tough task. The ever-changing environment, lifestyles and tenure
make one realise that the welfare of a soldier is directly linked to the
welfare of his family and their awareness and adaptability to the changes
in the society. Times demand that the concept of welfare be operated now
from the grassroot level.
Keeping
in view this ideal, welfare activities are organised at the unit levels.
Recently the 6014 (I) Armoured Workshop adopted welfare measures to keep
up the bubbling spirit of the jawans of the elite Black Charger Brigade of
2 Corps. To bring forth a better enlightened family for the jawans, adult
education programme is organised with warm support of the Red Cross
Society under the aegis of Department of Education, Haryana. A Nari
Shiksha Kendra has been instituted in the unit where cadres are
regularly groomed and on successful completion of Total Literacy
Campaign(TLC), the wives of jawans are awarded certificates on behalf of
the National Literacy Mission. A post literacy campaign is also on the
anvil.
Adding to this is the Family Welfare
Centre conducting classes in painting on glass, nibbing, water-colour, tie
and dye, stitching, embroidery and making soft cuddly toys. The unit
provides subsidised assistance of covering upto 75% of cost, to the
soldiers’ wives and children to develop their skills in pottery,
computer, traditional and non-traditional gourmet cooking, beauty care and
running beauty parlours as part-time work or a hobby. These classes have
proved to be immensely popular with them and have invoked tremendous
enthusiasm. Apart from providing vocational training, these forums have
given them scope to interact amongst themselves and with the officers’
wives. All these activities have resulted in boosting their confidence.
The unit also had the privilege to
conduct para-sailing for all personnel and their dependents at the station
with the assistance of 50(I) Para Brigade. The event was witnessed by
President, AWWA, HQ 2 Corps, Mrs Gita Vij and Brig Arun Kaistha, Commander
14 (I) Armoured Brigade. Enthusiastic participation by children and the
wives of jawans at the station indicated the enormous success of the event
