Nightingale of India at Sea

CGS Sarojini Naidu, the ninth fast patrol vessel of the Indian Coast Guard, commanded by Comdt SK Sarotra was commissioned by Defence Minister, Mr George Fernandes. The ship is based at New Mangalore under the administrative control of Commander, Coast Guard District Headquarters-III, Cmdt MA Thalha. This state-of-the-art vessel is the first of its class built by M/s Goa Shipyard Ltd.

The ship is named after the great leader of independence, Sarojini Naidu who was also called the "Nightingale of India". She took active part in the Civil Disobedience and Quit India movements and was sent to jail along with Mahatma Gandhi at Aga Khan Palace, Pune in 1942. A champion of the emancipation of women, Sarojini Naidu fought all her life against poverty, ignorance and social taboos.

This 48.14 metre-long vessel with a displacement of 260 tons has a top speed of 35 knots. It is primarily designed for patrolling, anti-smuggling and anti-terrorist operations, protection of fisheries and for search and rescue with a minimum endurance of 1500 nautical miles. It can also support Navy during war time as a coastal convoy consort and a communication link. This vessel is fastest in its category.

CGS Sarojini Naidu has a complement of five officers and 33 enrolled personnel. The vessel is powered by three 2720 KW MTU diesel engines driving independent Kameva water jets which are used for the first time in this class of ship. The micro processor based controls for these engines are the latest ones in marine technology and encompass state-of-the-art monitoring and control system. She is fitted with the latest satellite communication and navigation systems including differential global positioning system (DGPS), electronic chart display and information system (ECDIS) and global maritime distress and safety system (GMDSS)..
