Sarojini Naidu, the ninth fast patrol vessel of the Indian Coast
Guard, commanded by Comdt SK Sarotra was commissioned by Defence Minister,
Mr George Fernandes. The ship is based at New Mangalore under the
administrative control of Commander, Coast Guard District
Headquarters-III, Cmdt MA Thalha. This state-of-the-art vessel is the
first of its class built by M/s Goa Shipyard Ltd.
The
ship is named after the great leader of independence, Sarojini Naidu who
was also called the "Nightingale of India". She took active part
in the Civil Disobedience and Quit India movements and was
sent to jail along with Mahatma Gandhi at Aga Khan Palace, Pune in 1942. A
champion of the emancipation of women, Sarojini Naidu fought all her life
against poverty, ignorance and social taboos.
This 48.14 metre-long vessel with a
displacement of 260 tons has a top speed of 35 knots. It is primarily
designed for patrolling, anti-smuggling and anti-terrorist operations,
protection of fisheries and for search and rescue with a minimum endurance
of 1500 nautical miles. It can also support Navy during war time as a
coastal convoy consort and a communication link. This vessel is fastest in
its category.
CGS Sarojini Naidu has a complement of five
officers and 33 enrolled personnel. The vessel is powered by three 2720 KW
MTU diesel engines driving independent Kameva water jets which are
used for the first time in this class of ship. The micro processor based
controls for these engines are the latest ones in marine technology and
encompass state-of-the-art monitoring and control system. She is fitted
with the latest satellite communication and navigation systems including
differential global positioning system (DGPS), electronic chart display
and information system (ECDIS) and global maritime distress and safety
system (GMDSS)..
