The
84 Armoured Regiment, an elite unit of the Armoured Corps, celebrated its
silver jubilee somewhere in the Western Sector. Several functions and
activities were organised by the regiment to commemorate the twentyfive
glorious years of dedicated service to the nation.
The day was marked by a special sainik
sammelan addressed by the Colonel of the Regiment, Brig SS Sidhu who
called upon all ranks to uphold the unit tradition of valour and
battleworthiness. More dedication and hard work were required to preserve
the honour and glory achieved by the officers and men of the regiment, he
stressed.
A special day cover issued on the
occasion by the Army Postal Service was released by Maj Gen D N Desai,
General Officer Commanding of the armoured division. He also released the
silver jubilee newsletter of the unit. The regiment paid homage to its
founder Commandant, Lt Col Tarif Singh Dhiyia by unveiling his bust at the
regimental quarterguard by Brig SS Sidhu.
Prizes
were distributed to the squadrons and individuals for their excellent
performace in various competitions, sports events and training courses.
Those present on the occasion included the first Colonel of the regiment,
Lt Gen (Retd) J M Vohra, Lt Gen (Retd) Gurinder Singh and former
Commandant, Brig D S Chauhan.
To commemorate the occasion , the
regiment also organised a white-water rafting expedition in the Ganges
from Rudraprayag to Rishikesh. A blood donation camp was also held to mark
the occasion.
The 84 Armoured Regiment was raised
at Ahmadnagar on July 1, 1976. Its flag was consecrated on October 30,
1983. This day is celebrated as the Regimental Day. The unit is presently
commanded by Col Rajeev Tiwari.
During
the last twentyfive years, the regiment has participated in various
operations and acquitted itself well in all these operations. Besides, the
regiment had done yeoman's service in providing relief and rescue work
during floods in Haryana in 1995 and during the mid-air collision of two
airliners at Charkhi Dadri.
The regiment has had the honour of
representing the Armoured Corps twice during the Army Day and Republic Day
Parade in 1979 and the Army Day Parade, 2001. The regiment stands true to
its motto Aham Veerah Yudhsthale.
The Eighty five Armoured Regiment,
under the command of Col Praveen Dixit, celebrated silver jubilee on the
occasion of its raising day. The event was made memorable as the regiment
organised a re-union of all the retired officers, JCOs and ORs with their
families. Mrs DP Singh, wife of the first Commandant, late Lt Col DP
Singh, all ex-commandants and the present Colonel of the regiment, Lt Gen
SS Mehta graced the occasion.
The
event commenced with the chanting of prayers in the mandir and gurdwara.
Later bust of the first Commandant , Lt Col DP Singh in the regiment
quarter guard, was unveiled followed by a wreath-laying ceremony. Festive
matches were organised with the ex-JCOs challenging the present in base
ball, the ex-ORs against the present in six-a-side hockey and the
ex-officers teaming up against the present lot in golf.
Barakhana, pagal gymkhana and
special sainik sammelan were organised on a grand scale to add
colour to the mega event.
A silver jubilee brochure and a
first day cover were also released.
