Challenging the Himalayas

Adventure activities form an integral part of grooming a soldier in the Indian Army. They inculcate a sense of purpose, determination, camaraderie and courage all of which are hallmarks of a good soldier. A Brigade located in Joshimath has been a pioneer in the field of mountaineering ever since its raising. The formation has summitted number of peaks in the past, like Mount Kailash Sudershan, Mana, Bhagirathi and Kamet to name a few.

To provide adventure and gain invaluable information about the Himalaya, the Brigade has undertaken a high altitude traverse along the upper Himalayas. This challenging trek is the first of its kind along the Uttaranchal Tibet Border.

The aim of this expedition was to inculcate a spirit of adventure, camaraderie and team spirit amongst all the members. It has helped in acquiring valuable information about the flora and fauna of the Himalayan region as well as tactical information about the international boundary. It has also added rich information to the data bank on the terrain details of this difficult stretch.

The expedition was flagged off by Brig AK Lal, Commander of the Brigade. Before that all the expedition members performed puja at Badrinath Temple to seek blessings. The expedition team comprised troops of the two specialised Scouts Battalions of the Indian Army.

This first-of-its-kind expedition covered a distance of over 600 kms in 45 days traversing heights over 2000 ft in snow-bound and perennially glaciated region of the upper Himalayas. This expedition has been a real test of endurance and stamina for hill troops. The team comprised 4 officers, 4 Junior Commissioned Officers and 40 Other Ranks, all of whom were well trained mountaineers who have successfully summitted number of Kumaon and Garhwal peaks in the past.
