Mega-size
vegetables grown by Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO) at
Leh, special food packaging technology which survives high altitude and
other climatic extremes and nuclear biological chemical suit developed by
Defence Materials and Stores Research & Development Establishment (DMSRDE),
Kanpur have been the special attractions of Defence Pavilion at India
International Trade Fair-2001.
Research by DRDO at high altitude
and hill agriculture has led to successful development of horticulture to
provide fresh vegetables and fruits, like pumpkin, cabbage, cauliflower,
radish, carrots, potatoes, water-melon, bottlegourd etc in giant size to
remote forward areas in the Northern and Eastern Himalayas. Because of
seeds/techniques used and conditions in Ladakh, vegetables grow to bigger
sizes. Many of these were brought in from Leh and could be seen at the
pavilion.
To celebrate the "Empowerment
of Women", a special photo gallery was arranged covering a wide range
of activities of women who created a niche for themselves in the
Army, Navy, Air Force and also in the Coast Guard.
The stalls of the Defence public
sector undertakings were upgraded to display the latest products ranging
from ships, aircraft and equipment to a new design of superior and cheaper
traffic lights.
This year, the focus was on the
Army. On display were the Bofors gun, L-70, ZU 23 mm AD gun, reporter
radar, ICGV BMP-2 and T-72 tank.
