The
8 Assam Rifles recently celebrated its 46th raising day with enthusiasm.
The battalion, raised at Meerut by Lt Col JD Nadirshaw, has a
distingiushed record. It has been awarded two Ashok Chakra, two Kirti
Chakra, nine Shaurya Chakra, six Sena Medals, four Vishisht
Seva Medals, three President’s Police Medals, 18 Governor’s Gold
Medals, 23 Governor’s Silver Medal, 19 COAS Commendation Cards, 17 Goc-in-C
Commendation Cards, 64 Director General of Assam Rifles Commendation and
one Governor’s Sword of Honour. Last year, it received one Shaurya
Chakra, five Sena Medals, one Vishist Seva Medal, five
COAS Commendation Cards and eight GOC-in-C Commendation Cards.
Last year, in operation Hifazat
II, the battalion carried out exemplary counter-insurgency drives and
brought laurels to the formation.
Besides
sucessfully combating the insurgency in North-East, the unit has been able
to win the hearts of the people by giving them a helping hand whenever it
was required. The civic action projects have been undertaken for the
upliftment and empowerment of the local public.
