A Spectacular Feat

The Military Engineer Service (MES) completed the construction of Department of Defence (DAD) residential complex in Chennai six months ahead of schedule and also saved an amount of rupees 25 lakhs in the project cost. This unique feat of the MES was commended by Gen S Padmanabhan, Chief of the Army Staff who inaugurated the residential complex. The COAS also planted a sapling on the occasion.

The MES is the largest construction agency. It builds barracks and high-rise buildings of highest quality. The structures put up by the MES are cost effective and stable. The earth quake in Gujarat during January this year proved the quality of the MES works when the structures put up by it withstood the onslaught, said Brig K S Rampuria, Chief Engineer Chennai Zone. He also read the project report. He informed that the complex has 79 quarters for all categories of staff except group ‘A’. The Brigadier said that a facility to escape from the mosquito menace has also been incorporated as a special feature in all the houses.

The Controller of Defence Accounts, Chennai, Mr P K Das in his welcome address said that there was a plan to create a community hall to enhance the quality of life of the staff who would be occupying the quarters. He said that staff of the Defence Accounts Department working in Chennai, Avadi and Tambaram would be benefitted.

Mr N Gopalan, Controller General of Defence Accounts, Maj Gen V Jayashankar, GOC, ATNKK & C Area and other senior officers were present on the occasion.
