Madras Enginer Group and Centre, popularly known as Madras Sappers, proved its supremacy in sports again by winning the overall championship trophy for the sixth time in succession. The unit has been bagging the Chief of the Army Staff Overall Championship Trophy since its inception in 1996-97. In a glittering ceremony, Gen NC Vij, Chief of the Army Staff, presented the coveted trophy to the Madras Sappers for the year 2002-2003 at Army Headquarters.

Thirtythree training centres of Indian Army participated in the championship. Having scored 92 points out of 96, Madras Engineer Group became the champions
leaving Bengal Engineer Group (Roorkee) to second and Artillery to third position.

Madras Sappers has earned laurels at various national and international events which is an outcome of vigorous training imparted to recruits. It has so far produced eleven Olympians, eight Arjuna awardees and many other national/international level sportsmen.

"Madras Sappers have worked hard to raise the standard of sports in the country and produce sportsmen of international status. They are determined to maintain the premier position in Army sports championship", said Commandant Brig JJ Manavalan while congratulating the winners.
