The
first post-Independence regimental history of Punjab Regiment titled By
Land and Sea (Volume-I) was written by Brig VR Raghavan (later
Lieutenant General and Colonel of the Punjab Regiment, now retired). It
covered the glorious history of the Punjab Regiment, the oldest Infantry
regiment of the Indian Army from 1947 to 1979, with certain events having
taken place during the early part of 1980.
The second volume of By Land and
Sea has been written by Col Anil Shorey, a second generation officer.
It lucidly highlights the outstanding achievements of the various
battalions of the regiment during the turbulent years from 1980 to 2001.
This new book chronicles the annals
of the Punjab regiment in a simple and lucid style. The book
gives many examples of this regiment’s Billiant performance in
counter-insurgency operations, combating militancy in Punjab and at the
Sri Lanka and Kargil theatres, in winning the hearts and minds of the
people of Jammu and Kashmir and those of the Eastern estates and in
providing frequent aid to civil authorities.
The period has also seen the raising
of two regular battalions of the regiment ie. 27 and 28 Punjab, three
Rashtriya Rifles (RR) battalions namely 7, 22 and 37 RR, and 150 Infantry
Battalion (TA) Punjab. INS Ranjit, a frontline destroyer of the
Indian Navy, was also affiliated to the Punjab Regiment. An updated list
of post 1980 award winners and a comprehensive index are special features
of the book.
Explicitly chronicled and well illustrated with
coloured maps and photographs, the book is very interesting to read. The
book has been published by Lancer Publisher and Distributors and
priced at Rs 495.
