Sarang Sails to Chennai

CGS Sarang was dedicated to the service of the country's eastern seaboard by the Governor of Tamil Nadu, Mr PS Rama Mohan Rao at a function held at Chennai Port. Speaking on the occasion, the Governor complimented the Coast Guard for the increase in its resources. "What BSF has been doing at land borders, Coast Guard has been doing in the seas", he added.

In his speech, Cmde RS Vasan, Commander, Coast Guard Region (East) said that Coast Guard was given one advanced light helicopter in March this year and one more would be given soon. He also said that four hovercraft were inducted into Coast Guard, two at Haldia and the remaining at Mandapam.

CGS Sarang is commanded by AK Verma, Deputy Inspector General. The ship is the latest of the advanced offshore patrol vessels, built for Coast Guard by Goa Shipyard. It was stationed in Mumbai since commissioning in June 1999. Sarang has been designed to operate advanced light helicopter, the Commanding Officer of the ship said.
