Rendering Relief at Ruliana

 
 

A medical-cum-veterinary camp was conducted by 350 Infantry Brigade at Ruliana near Gurdaspur. The aim of the camp was to promote cooperation between the civilians and the Army personnel and also to lend a helping hand to the people living in border areas.

A medical team comprising seven Army doctors and four specialists from civil hospitals at Gurdaspur and Kalanaur attended the camp. The doctors included ENT, eye and other specialists. Consequent to a publicity campaign, response to the camp was overwhelming and altogether 2146 patients were tended to at the two-day camp.

Medicines as prescribed by the doctors were distributed to all patients. Liaison was carried out with medical authorities to enable referral of patients for follow-up treatment including operation at Government Civil Hospital, Gurdaspur. Maj Gen Ashok Kapur, GOC, 15 Infantry Division visited the medical camp on the second day.

Three veterinary doctors including a senior veterinary surgeon from Kalanaur Government Hospital provided medical assistance to livestock and cattle of the villagers. Approximately, 58 animals were treated during the camp.

On this occasion, representatives from State Departments of Health, Horticulture, Fisheries, Agriculture and Forest had put up stalls to impart information and enhance the general awareness level of the villagers. Relevant messages to encourage girl's education, family planning and empowerment of women were conveyed by screening meaningful documentaries. A play depicting the need to adopt small family norms generated interest among the spectators. Village Sarpanch, present on the occasion, claimed that the farmers had benefited immensely from the information regarding the latest seeds and fertilisers made available by the Horticulture Department.

Officials of local banks and District Pension Disbursement Officer (DPDO), Gurdaspur were present to look into the pension-related problems of ex-servicemen of the area. Altogether, 15 cases of pension disbursement and loans from the banks for ex-servicemen were attended to during the camp.

Volleyball and tug-of-war competitions were also organised to evoke enthusiastic response from villagers and school teams. A mobile CSD canteen was also setup to provide essential items to ex-servicemen. The GOC presented mementoes to doctors and government officials who participated in the camp. In addition, certificates of participation and prizes were given to volunteer students who assisted in conducting the camp.
