A March to Mainstream

Assam Rifles units in Nagaland under the stewardship of Maj Gen D P Merchant, Inspector General, Assam Rifles has been actively engaged in various activities to promote peace and prosperity in the state.

Due to a close interaction with the people, a large number of undergrounds have laid down their arms and decided to shun violence. In March last, eight undergrounds with sophisticated arms and ammunition surrendered at Zunheboto in Nagaland before Brig N N Madappa, DIG.
NLR (N) Assam Rifles. These undergrounds are being rehabilitated by giving special concessions to ensure their enrolment in Assam Rifles.

Computer literacy is also being spread by opening state-of-the-art computer centres. Three such centers have been opened at Tuensang, Zunheboto and Mokokchung in the past few months.

The Assam Rifles which celebrated 167 years of its raising on March 23 last, ensures a strict enforcement of the ceasefire in Nagaland while preventing clashes between various undergound factions. The units have been active in catching militants who are engaged in extortion activities. To ensure that unemployed youth do not join militant groups, self-employment schemes like poultry and piggery farm training are also being introduced.
