From Sand To Snow

To commemorate the nineteenth anniversary of the raising of 24 Artillery Brigade, a sand-snow mountaineering expedition was organised. The expedition by Ranbakura Artillery Brigade scaled Ladakhi and Shitidhar peaks located in Manali in Rohtang region. The "All Gunner Odyssey", the first ever mountaineering expedition, of the Ranbakura Division comprised 6 officers, 3 JCOs and 10 ORs.

The expedition team was flagged off by Maj Gen KB Kapoor, GOC 24 Infantry Division. During the course of expedition the team had established the base camp at Beas Kund (the source of Beas River) at an altitude of 3320M. After acclimatisation for one week, the team established two more camps. Camp-I (4150 M) and Camp-II (4600 M) during the assault on the summit. The team in two groups successfully scaled Ladakhi peak (5725 M) and Shitidhar peak (5289M).

The expedition team, on its return, was given a rousing reception at HQ Western Command. Lt Gen Vijay Oberoi, the then GOC-in-C, Western Command was present on the occasion. The GOC complemented the team and praised the team spirit and camaraderie of the participants. The event got a wide coverage in the national and local dailies.
