Following the torrential rains in many areas of Assam, the civil administration requisitioned the Army and Air Force to provide relief to the affected public. Evacuation work was carried out by the Army and Air Force, with the help of helicopters and boats, rescuing almost 4000 people from inaccessible areas besides providing food and medical aid to them.

In the district of Kamrup, particularly Rangiya sub-division, columns of Army rescued nearly 2000 people. The jawans of Sikh Regiment braved the currents of the overflowing Barlia River to rescue the marooned people. They also gave medical assistance to 2500 flood-affected people.

Project Setuk

Lt Gen A K Puri, Director General of Border Roads Organisation (BRO), visited the HQs of Chief Engineer project Setuk in Shillong recently. During his visit, Lt Gen Puri also addressed a press conference where he highlighted the role and details of the major construction projects being undertaken for development of the north-eastern region.

Talking about the project Setuk which looks after the infrastructural development in South Meghalaya, South Assam and the state of Tripura, he lamented that militancy was badly affecting the progress of the construction of fencing work along the Indo-Bangladesh border in Tripura. The North Eastern Council (NEC), the nodal agency entrusted with co-ordinating the infrastructural development of the North East, including road construction, has entrusted BRO with laying of nearly 3400 kms of road of which, 2800 kms of formation and 2200 kms of surfacing was completed, he added.

Among other significant achievements of the project is the resurfacing of Agartala Air Field Works without disrupting the regular flights and construction of two accommodation projects for Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya in the high-insugency areas of Tripura. The DGBR maintained that the organisation has expanded to be one of the country's premier and most sought-after construction agencies.
