4 Guards Celebrates Its Glory

The 4 Guards (1 Rajput) was raised on September 15, 1978 at Sasseram (Bihar) as 2nd battalion of the 15th Bengal Native Infantry. It has an enviable record of 23 battle honours to its credit.

During 1947 - 48 Pakistani aggression, the Unit acquitted itself in an exemplary manner and was declared as the Saviours of Naushera. It was in this battle that late NK Yadunath Singh was awarded the Param Vir Chakra for his conspicuous gallantry and supreme sacrifice. In the 1971 Indo-Pak war the battalion spearheaded the thrust from Eastern Sector and was the first in the Indian Army to reach the outskirts of Dacca after routing the enemy enroute. For it's conspicuous gallantry, 4 Guards was bestowed by the battle honour of Akhaura and the Theatre Honour of East Pakistan. The Unit was also selected to give guard of honour to Sheikh Mujibur Rehman, the first President of Independent Bangla- desh at Dacca.

The Paltan was also selected to represent the nation as a part of the international contingent for the UNEF, to the Gaza Strip. The battalion proved its mettle in counter-insurgency operations in Northern Command. For its outstanding performance it was also chosen to spearhead the mechanism of the Brigade of Guards.

Somewhere in the Western Sector, the Battalion celebrated its 202nd raising day recently. Brig N Bahri, an ex-Commanding Officer of the Unit was the chief guest on the occasion. Many retired officers and a large number of widows attended the celebrations.

The celebrations began with a Mandir function to invoke blessings of God. A wreath-laying ceremony at War Memorial and visit to Quarter Guard by Commandant was also organised on the occasion. A ceremonial Kasam Parade was also held wherein all ranks of the unit took oath of allegiance to uphold the highest traditions that have been a source of the Unit ie ‘namak, izzat aur nishan’.

A grand Sainik Sammelan was held where the unit magazine Heritage was released. The celebrations culminated with a barakhana, an audio visual show and Officers' Mess Function.
