The
‘Tenacious Ten’ of Bihar Regiment, under the aegis of 21
Mountain Division, has been entrusted with the indomitable
task of administering a Rehabilitation Training Camp (RTC) at
Tamulpur in Assam. The aim is to guide the myriad militia who
have surrendered to the Army in the recent past. This camp
attempts insinuation of confidence and self-pride among them
to face the vagaries of the society at large. The centre,
equipped with an IT infrastructure, would help the youth in
enhancement of their knowledge and also to hone their skills.
Apart from driving, maintenance of vehicles and repair which
is preferred by the inmates of the camp, training in typing,
tailoring, computers and carpentry is also imparted at the
camp.
The
day at the centre commences with a warming-up exercise
followed by motivational lectures, training classes etc. For
driving lessons, the state government has provided a mini bus,
but the inmates have also been allowed to drive Army vehicles
like jeep and heavy trucks. Few denizens have been granted
driving licences by the authorities and some have become the
proud owners of mini trucks/buses in Guwahati. Operation Beacon,
an agro-cum livestock project, has also been conceived by 10
Bihar to provide livelihood to the inmates of the camp.
The
RTC, only of its
kind run by the Army in entire North-East, has become a model
for all to look up to. Life for these denizens at the
Rehabilitation Training Camp is best summed up by Governor of
Assam, Lt Gen (Retd) SK Sinha who said that the institute was
indeed a ray of hope for the insurgents who wanted to make a
comeback into the mainstream society from the path of
violence. A recent letter written by the denizens to the
Governor to postpone the posting of Lt Col Sajjad Ali speaks
of a special bondage shared between the mentor in uniform and
the inhabitants of the camp.
