Sky Shooters : 39 years of Glorious Service

The 48 Air Defence Regiment (Sky Shooters) celebrated its 39th raising day recently in the southern sector. A number of serving and retired personnel were present on the occasion. The regiment was raised in 1962 as a Light Anti Aircraft Regiment (LAA). Since then this regiment has been redesignated from time to time.

The regiment has taken part in all the post-independence wars. The officers and men of the regiment displayed great courage and fearless devotion to duty and all attacks were repulsed successfully. In 1971 war, the regiment shot down two enemy fighters and hit three within a span of 12 days.

On completion of two years tenure in counter-insurgency operations in northern sector, the unit descended to peace tenure where it added more feathers to its cap. The regiment created history by achieving 12 sports trophies in the last training year. In the professional area, the regiment stood first in the
Brigade Inter Unit Trade Test competition in gunnery and operator trades.

Many recreational and welfare facilities have been initiated in the unit to improve the quality of life of the troops and families. Aquaguard water purifiers have been fitted in all the cook houses. Various competitions have been organised for the children. Several sight-seeing programmes for troops and families have been conducted. Collective tuition classes for children of the JCOs and ORs up to standard X have also been conducted. Computer education is provided to children.

Thirtynine years of glorious service and unbroken spirit of heroism of the regiment is an inspiration for the future generations. The unit continues with its quest for excellence.
