AFWWA Welfare Meet
"The
creative activities and welfare projects of Air Force Wives Welfare
Association (AFWWA), Scanners were praiseworthy," said Mrs Sunita
Bhatia, President AFWWA (Regional) while attending the AFWWA welfare meet
at Air Force Station, Jodhpur.
Mrs Sunita
Kumbhat, President AFWWA (Scanners) received Mrs Bhatia at the Air Force
Station (Scanners) Jodhpur. Mrs Bhatia inaugurated a shopping complex Bani-Thani.
Classical dances, folk dances and other items formed part of a cultural
programme.
The chief
guest also interacted with the families of airmen and enquired about their
welfare. Mrs Seema Saraswat, Secretary, AFWWA proposed a vote of thanks.

Services
Handball Championship
The
XVI Services Handball Championship 2001-02 was conducted by the Army
School of Physical Training, Pune at the multi-purpose synthetic sports
complex. The Army Red, Army Green, Indian Navy and Indian Air Force teams
participated in the championship.
Brig Bir Nath Rawat, Commandant,
ASPT presided over the opening ceremony. The Indian Navy won the Services
title defeating Army Red. Maj Gen BK Bopanna, MG-IC-ADM HQ, Southern
Command was the chief guest and gave away the prizes to winners and
runner-up.

Inter-Services
Wrestling Championship
The
51st All India Inter Services Wrestling Championship-2001 was organised at
the Diamonds Jubilee Sports Complex of Air Force Station, Bamrauli,
Allahabad. The championship was inaugurated by Air Cmde A K Bharadwaj, Air
Officer Commanding of Air Force Station, Bamrauli. Air Cmde Bharadwaj
expressed his desire to make Bamrauli one of the traditional centres for
wrestling.
The inaugural bout of the
championship was in Greeco Roman 54 kg category in which Hav Manraj Singh
of Army Red defeated L/Nk Parsu Ram of Army Green. The best fight was in
58 kg category wherein L/Nk Pradeep scored a maximum of 13 points to win
his bout.

Whaler
Sailing Expedition
A
whaler sailing expedition was held at the Chilka Lake in which five
officers, 40 sailors and 64 trainees of INS Chilka participated. The
expedition sailed from INS Chilka boat pool to the Chilka Lake mouth and
back. The base camp was set up at Satpada Jetty and the first boat covered
this distance in about 4 hrs 15 min. The expedition camped at Satpada for
the night. A cultural programme was organised which was attended by the
Commanding Officer along with other heads of department. The expedition
set sail for the lake mouth the next day and after sighting the Bay of
Bengal on the other side they reversed course to return to base. This
expedition helped the trainees to improve their skill in seamanship.

A
Flying Career
An
information stall on "Career options in the Indian Air Force"
was set up by the Education Section of Air Force Academy at the annual
training camp of National Cadet Corps, Andhra Air Squadron NCC at
Hyderabad.

Cdr C K Vyas, Commanding Officer, Andhra Air Squadron NCC and Flt Lt K V
Rao explained to the NCC (Air Wing) cadets about various branches and
their roles in the Air Force. They also informed about the requisite
educational qualification, physical and medical standards required to join
the Air Force. The NCC cadets put a number of queries which were clarified
on the spot. The NCC camp was attended by 750 school and college students
from various colleges all over Andhra Pradesh.
Earlier,
Air Force Band of Air Force Academy played a concert at the camp. The band
was led by Band Master, Junior Warrant Officer CM Joseph.

District Ex-Servicemen Multipurpose Co-operative Society
Udupi
District Ex-Servicemen Multipurpose Co-operative Society was formed in
1988 by the ex-servicemen of Syndicate Bank, Manipal. MD Sreedhara, an
ex-serviceman was the first President of the association. The aims of the
association are to establish contact, hold discussions, extend help to the
ex-servicemen in benefitting from various facilities offered by the
government and helping them to solve their problems.
In 1990, the government alloted land
to the association at a concessional rate.
Recently the society’s building
Veer Bhawan was inaugurated. It was also decided to allot on rent basis
the ground floor shops to ex-servicemen. The first floor was earmarked for
the office of the association and Udupi District Ex-servicemen
Multi-activities Co-operative Association Ltd. A committee under the
presidentship of Col B Ramachandra Rao (Retd) and ‘Swarna Sanchike’
committee under the presidentship of Mr Chandrasekhar Suvarna were also
constituted.
The society has made tremendous
progress and has been doing a yeoman service for the welfare of the
ex-servicemen and their families. It aims at furthering its services for
the welfare of Udupi district ex-servicemen.

Book on
Pension Regulations Released
The Minister of State for Defence, Mr U V Krishnam Raju has said that the
government is aware of the problems faced by the ex-servicemen and all
efforts are being made to redress their grievances. This was stated by him
while releasing the book titled "Pension Regulations for the
Army" written by Col S R Kalkat (Retd). The Minister said that the
government attaches utmost importance to the welfare of the ex-servicemen.
Speaking on the occasion, the minister complimented the author for the
efforts made by him in bringing out the book for the benefit of the
retired officers and jawans of the Armed Forces. Mr Krishnam Raju also
added that the book would be very useful in the redressal of the
grievances of the ex-Servicemen and their families.

Gen S
Padmanabhan takes over as the Honorary Colonel of the Brigade of the
Guards
General
S Padmanabhan, Chief of the Army Staff took over as the Honorary Colonel
of the Brigade of the Guards. Gen S Padmanabhan was presented
accoutrements of Brigade of the Guards by Lt Gen HRS Mann, Chief of Staff
Headquarters Western Command and the Colonel of Brigade of the Guards.
Brigade of the Guards is an elite
regiment of the Indian Army. It is the first "All India" mixed
"All Class" composition of infantry regiment of the Army where
troops from all parts of India serve together in various battalions of the
regiment.
Raising of Brigade of the Guards as
an ‘all class’ composition regiment by late Field Marshal K M Cariappa
was a bold experiment in national integration which succeeded beyond
expectations. Brigade of the Guards has bagged two Param Vir Chakra, six
Maha Vir Chakra and fortyone Vir Chakra and many other gallantry and
distinguished service awards.
