To Dare in Air

The Southern Naval Command (SNC) Aero Adventure Club was inaugurated by Vice Adm Madanjit Singh, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Southern Naval Command (SNC) at INS Garuda. The club, with two power hang gliders procured from Bangalore, aims to inculcate a spirit of adventure among the naval personnel and also to bring a larger number of enthusiasts close to the hitherto inaccessible field of aero adventure. The power hang glider is a natural extension of the hang gliding sport. It is one of the classic 'man with the elements' sports involving the deft manipulations of a simple sail cloth spread across a triangular frame to glide across the skies.

Presently, about 14 enthusiasts from various units at Kochi are being trained by three highly qualified instructors from the Navy. The training team includes Cdr Mohan Kutty, a Technical Officer posted at the Chief Quality Assurance Establishment (CQAE), Bangalore. He is one of the pioneers of adventure sports in the Navy and is largely responsible for the popularity this sport has gained today. The second member is Surgeon Cdr Derrick D'Coasta of INS Vajrabahu, Mumbai, an underwater medicine specialist. Lt Ranadeep Bose, a Logistic Officer of INS Hamla, Mumbai, is the third member of the training team who was trained by Surgeon Cdr D'Coasta. The Officer-in-Charge of the adventure club, Lt Nikhil Joshi of 550 Squadron welcomed the gathering at the inaugural ceremony.
