ND School Celebrates Golden Jubilee

The ND School, Kochi has its origin as the Radar and Direction Finding Branch of the Royal Indian Navy for training officers and sailors in Mumbai, Karachi and UK. It was formally commissioned as the Navigation and Direction School at Kochi on August 12, 1952 with Lt Cdr Beddeo of the Royal Navy as its first Officer-in-Charge. The school manned by about 15 officers and 50 sailors trains about 230 officers and 600 sailors annually. The school has also been training officers and sailors from foreign navies. The school celebrated its golden jubilee recently with enthusiasm.

The golden jubilee celebrations included an in-house symposium on navigation, operations and air direction. The symposium was attended by several serving and retired navy officers and sailors. Vice Adm Madanjit Singh, FOC-in-C, Southern Naval Command released the golden jubilee edition of the schools' journal Dhruv to commemorate the occasion. Admiral OS Dawson, the ex-Chief of the Naval Staff, was the chief guest for the occasion. The important milestone achieved by the school, school's crest, souvenirs, photographs of the three Admirals of the ND Branch who held the reigns of the Navy were some of the other items placed in the ‘Time Capsule’ for posterity. Rear Adm Rakesh Chopra, the senior-most serving navigator along with the youngest sailor of the school cut the anniversary cake.
