Sports
have occupied a special place in Madras Sappers' activities ever since
their raising. From the early days, the Madras Sappers have made sports an
integral part of their professional training. They have earned laurels for
the country with their brilliant performance in international events. The
regiment is proud of its 10 Olympians and eight Arjuna awardees.
Boxing is one game in which no one has been able to
challenge the supremacy of Madras Sappers. They have produced several
world class boxers. L/Nk (later Subedar) Subramaniam was an unbeaten
bantam weight champion of Services from 1947 to 1963. Hony Capt Venu, Hony
Capt C Naraya, Hony Capt Machaiah, Hony Capt Amaldas and Hony Capt G
Manoharan have been honoured with Arjuna awards for their
stupendous performance at national and international levels. Sub Maj
William represented the country in 1986 Seoul Olympic Games. Madras
Sappers have been winning the Army Boxing Championships since 1997. Their
present-day boxers of repute are
Hav Johnson, Hav Santhosh Kumar, Hav Kuttappa and Rect Hav Prem Kumar.
Hockey
has been the favourite game of Sappers since early 20th century. However,
it was in 1940 that the hockey team of Madras Sappers made its mark. In
1955, they won the Agha Khan Cup Hockey Tournament. L/Nk VJ Peter (later
Subedar Major) participated in Asian Games in 1958. He also participated
in 1960, 1964 and 1968 Olympics and 1967 Asian Games. He was honoured with
Arjuna award in 1968. Nk Manuel was a member of the Services team
from 1950 to 1964. Hav Chengappa was a member of the national junior
hockey team, which toured West Germany and Spain in 1975. Capt BK
Subramani represented India for eight years. He took part in 1986 World
Cup and 1988 Seoul Olympics. Nb Sub Ignace Tirkey is, at present, a member
of the Indian hockey team along with Nb Sub Sampath Kumar, physical
trainer.
Madras Sappers made their debut in national level
aquatics in 1954 when Nb Sub Shamsher Khan won the 200- mtr 'butterfly'
race and created a record. He has two national records to his credit in
100-mtr 'butterfly' and 200-mtr 'breast stroke'. He represented India in
1956 at the Melbourne Olympics.
Sub
Maj C Shanmugam, a national level swimmer, was the coach of the national
water polo team during Asian Games held in Tehran in 1974. In water polo,
Hav Pattabiraman represented India in 1970 Asian Games held in Bangkok and
in Tehran in 1974. Sub Prabhakaran Nair won a bronze medal in 1982 Asian
Games held in Delhi. He was the captain of Indian water polo team for the
Seoul Asian Games. The swimmers from Madras Sappers have dominated the
Services and national Championships from time to time. At present, Nb Sub
Sujith of Madras Sappers is one of the fastest swimmers in the country.
Col PK Uberoi (Retd) won the rowing competition at
national level seven times from 1978 to 1984. He represented India in
international meets in Holland, UK and Germany. He was honoured with Arjuna
award in 1983. Sub Gajendran represented India in the 'Coxed Four'
event at the Asian Games in 1990. Nb Sub Dileep Kumar and Nb Sub VV Rao
had the distinction of bagging the first gold medal in rowing for India in
the 3rd Asian Championship in 1998. Hav PT Poulose represented the country
in the ‘Coxed Four’ event at the Busan Asian Games in 2002 and won a
bronze medal. Nb Sub Vagharam Bishnoi took part in the 8th Asian Canoeing
Championship held in China in September 2000 and won a bronze medal. This
was the maiden participation of Madras Sappers in this event.
Madras Sappers have made their mark in the athletics
too. Nk Francis Xavier represented India in 1973 Asian Meet in Manila.
Today, Nb Sub Anil Kumar is the fastest runner in the country. He broke
39-year old record of legendary Milkha Singh in 2000. He also represented
India in Sydney Olympics in 2000.
The Army Sports Championship Trophy has been the monopoly of Madras
Sappers. Ever Since its inception in 1996-97, they have won the trophy for
six years continuously. A unique achievement which is a matter of pride
for Madras Sappers.
