A Six-hour Battle

On December 9, 1971 at 11 am, 12 Kumaon, as part of 57 Mountain Division, received orders to rush to Daudkandi (22 miles east of Dacca) and to capture it by 5 pm.

Daudkandi was held by a company strength of Pakistanis. When the unit was four miles short of Daudkandi, it was stalled by heavy enemy fire. In a classical outflanking move, two companies promptly commenced encirclement of the defended locality occupied by the enemy. The enemy hastily withdrew towards Daudkandi leaving their dead and wounded behind.

On approaching Daudkandi, enemy automatics opened up again from houses in the outskirts. Unmindful of this fire, the leading company rushed to the nearest operative jetty on the Meghna river and captured it. A platoon was sent on the opposite side to keep the enemy engaged and the second company operated in between to capture the other jetty further south.

This immediate fanning out and rushing, covered by prompt fire from artillery and RCL guns caught the enemy completely off-balance. A ferry boat with a lorry and a company of enemy escaped leaving the rear parties to their fate. Thus by 5 pm, Daudkandi was captured. Tactical brilliance, superior battle drills and the urge to win at all costs won 12 Kumaon the battle honour of Daudkandi.

Super Strike

Army troops foiled a fidayeen attack on an Army camp at Poonch in Jammu and Kashmir.

Two terrorists attempted to enter the Army camp at about 4.30 am on September 4 last. The alert sentries immediately opened fire. Getting exposed, the terrorists tried to take shelter in the nearby houses which was resisted by the civilians. The terrorists then resorted to indiscriminate firing killing a lady and injuring three others. They made another desperate attempt to enter the camp by lobbying hand-grenades and firing from their automatic weapons. In the ensuing fight, both terrorists got killed. No casualty was suffered by the Army.

Two AK-47 rifles, 14 AK rifle magazines, 310 rounds of AK rifle, seven hand-grenades and some currency were recovered from the slain terrorists.
