A Stitch in Time

Air Stores Park at Digaru near Guwahati, a vital Air Force base of Eastern Air Command, was under flood waters for about ten days. The water level which entered into operational area was five to six feet high. The Air Force personnel swung into action in time and saved the situation. The Air Force base under the aegis of Gp Capt VM Upadhyay took a series of steps to protect Air Force assets worth crores of rupees from being damaged by the deluge.

The Air Force officials constantly monitored the rising flood water being in touch with the civil authorities at Umthru Dam and Byrnight. Water-level monitoring poles were erected at various vital locations. Before the red mark at the poles were touched, the station authorities shifted the stores, documents and furniture to safer places. Even the families were evacuated to safer places. An emergency control room with round-the-clock monitoring system was pressed into action. Arrangements for alternate water source in form of hand pumps and water tankers were made. Precautionary measures were also taken against the water-borne diseases. Boats were used in the affected areas.
