MCEME: Golden Jubilee Celebrations

It was during World War-II that a need was felt to modernise the Army to meet the challenges of the days to come. It was against this backdrop that the Military College of Electronic and Mechanical Engineering (MCEME) took birth. It was born as 1 EME School at Kirkee in 1946. It moved from Kirkee to Secunderabad in July 1953 as 1 EME School with Col PSG Trivedi as its first Commandant. MCEME was established with the purpose of providing technical training to the officers and men of the Corps of EME. In due course, the institute started imparting training to the officers of Army, Navy, Air Force as well as public sector units.

The Chinese aggression in 1962 necessitated an increase in the trained manpower for the expansion of Army which resulted in opening of another EME School at Baroda, designated as EME School (North).

The EME School at Secunderabad was again redesignated Military College of Electronic and Mechanical Engineering in 1967 with the addition of faculties in electronics, electrical and mechanical engineering, industrial engineering and tactics. In 1987, the faculty of aeronautical engineering was added to support the newly formed Army Aviation Corps.

Today, MCEME conducts graduate and postgraduate engineering courses in the fields of computer science, communications, radars, missiles, aeronautics and mechanical engineering. It also conducts management courses for middle and senior level officers as well as diploma courses in various engineering disciplines for other ranks of the Corps of EME. A large number of officers and other ranks from friendly foreign countries come here for training. In addition, the Simulator Development Division attached to the college has earned reputation at the national level in developing simulators required by Armed Forces for training purposes. The institution has also been imparting military and technical training to the Gentleman Cadets who are inducted as graduate engineers into the technical arms and services under the 10+2 Technical Entry Scheme since 2000.

This year is a landmark in the history of MCEME as it completed 50 years of glorious existence after it was shifted from Kirkee to Secunderabad. During this period, it produced a galaxy of distinguished ‘Soldier Engineers’ who have won accolades for their exceptional technical knowledge and skills both at home and abroad. A large number of alumni of the college have been honoured with Padma Bhushan, Padma Shri, Param Vishist Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, Vishist Seva Medal and Arjuna Award. In the field of sports too, the college produced winners at national and international events especially in athletics, mountaineering, squash and sailing. Recently a bronze medal has been won by Nb Sub Choudhary in sailing at Busan Asian Games.

The college received the Golden Peacock National Training Award in 1997 for "excellence in training practices" and also in 1998 for "Outstanding achievement in Pursuit of total quality".

To celebrate the golden jubilee of the college, Lt Gen RK Mehta, Senior Colonel Commandant and Commandant, MCEME, addressed the golden jubilee sainik sammelan.

Earlier, Lt Gen RK Mehta distributed commendation cards and medals. The awards for professional excellence were bagged by Sub N Venkateswarulu, Hav Rajan Kakoti and Nk Rajesh Kumar. Later, Lt Gen Mehta released the First Day Cover to mark the occasion.
